  • Short Description of the Organization

  • AWEN is an independent organization/network of 10 different women organizations working all over Albania, from north to south. AWEN is working in advocacy and lobbying towards the advancement of gender equality in the country. AWEN is also providing technical and financial support to the members of the network with the Sida support mainly on provision of social services to girls and women in need in Albania.

  • Short Description of Implemented Projects and Achieved Results

  • * Advocating for women’s human rights is one of main areas of activities of
    AWEN. Through our joint work, AWEN and its member organizations have gained
    a reputation as fundamental change agents in promoting and protecting women
    human rights in Albania. Our crucial and first-hand information and
    experience have affected multiple key laws in the country regarding gender
    equality and domestic violence.Our inputs and recommendations have been
    accepted and (to an important extent) integrated in the national laws and
    policies.
    AWEN is providing sub-grants for its members for the 7th year with
    the support of Sida in Albania. This proves the management abilities of AWEN
    are sustainable in terms of finance, content and also monitoring and
    evaluation.
    AWEN and its members have contributed to important achievements at
    local level such as political decisions leading to increased municipality
    budget for social services towards women (Selenicë); Establishment of women
    alliances in Municipality Councils (Himara, Selenica, and Durres);
    Establishment and strengthening of referral mechanisms between public
    actors and local organizations civil society in Delvina and Saranda;
    establishment of the emergency shelter in Dibra and local referral
    mechanisms in 4 Administrative Units; etc. We have learned that building
    collaborations with municipal services through referral mechanism is the
    most effective use of local resources and skills. A strong network increases
    the outreach, improves services, and holds duty bearers more accountable.
    It leads to better results regarding the advocacy for gender equality.
    Within the framework of advocacy for the protection and promotion of
    women rights, AWEN has become a trusted collaborator with international
    entities (EU Delegation, GREVIO Committee, DG Near in Brussels, US Embassy,
    UN Women, Council of Europe, WAVE network, Embassy of Sweden, Embassy of
    Netherlands, etc.), national institutions (Line Ministries) and local
    institutions (municipalities where AWEN members are active as well as
    municipalities of Tirana, Kruja, Lezha, Ules, and Divjake).
    The main AWEN supporters/donors are: Sida-Swedish Embassy in Tirana, UN Women, Us Embassy – Small Grants Programme, Kvinna till Kvinna Foundation, Regional Programmes leaded by women organizations and funded by EU and Austrian Development Agency, etc.
