{"id":17277,"date":"2025-06-03T13:01:16","date_gmt":"2025-06-03T11:01:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gbwn.net\/?p=17277"},"modified":"2025-06-03T13:05:52","modified_gmt":"2025-06-03T11:05:52","slug":"world-bicycle-day-2025-pedaling-toward-equality-safety-and-sustainability-in-the-balkans-and-beyond","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gbwn.net\/en\/world-bicycle-day-2025-pedaling-toward-equality-safety-and-sustainability-in-the-balkans-and-beyond\/","title":{"rendered":"World Bicycle Day 2025: Pedaling Toward Equality, Safety, and Sustainability in the Western Balkans, Moldova and Beyond"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-start=\"111\" data-end=\"500\">Today, the 3rd of June, on <strong data-start=\"121\" data-end=\"142\">World Bicycle Day<\/strong>, we celebrate <strong>the humble bicycle \u2014 a tool for clean transport, better health, and gender-inclusive mobility.<\/strong> But while the benefits of biking are universally acknowledged, the reality on the ground tells a different story: safety, accessibility, and gender equality are still major challenges in many countries across the Western Balkans and Eastern Europe. Let\u2019s take a closer look at the data \u2014 and the stories behind it.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"574\" data-end=\"617\"><strong data-start=\"584\" data-end=\"617\">Who Cycles \u2013 And Who Doesn\u2019t?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"619\" data-end=\"670\">In <strong data-start=\"622\" data-end=\"641\">North Macedonia<\/strong>, a recent survey found that:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"671\" data-end=\"840\">\n<li data-start=\"671\" data-end=\"741\">\n<p data-start=\"673\" data-end=\"741\"><strong data-start=\"673\" data-end=\"682\">64.1%<\/strong> of bicycle owners are men, while only <strong data-start=\"721\" data-end=\"730\">38.7%<\/strong> are women.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"742\" data-end=\"840\">\n<p data-start=\"744\" data-end=\"840\">A striking <strong data-start=\"755\" data-end=\"764\">44.1%<\/strong> of people never use bicycles or skateboards. Among them, <strong data-start=\"822\" data-end=\"829\">62%<\/strong> are women.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"842\" data-end=\"1192\">The reasons are clear: <strong data-start=\"865\" data-end=\"904\">lack of safety, poor infrastructure<\/strong>, and limited access to quality cycling lanes. In <strong data-start=\"954\" data-end=\"964\">Skopje<\/strong>, although there are 110 km of bike lanes, many are poorly maintained, disconnected, and often unusable. Still, there are bright spots \u2014 in <strong data-start=\"1104\" data-end=\"1113\">Ohrid<\/strong>, for example, <strong data-start=\"1128\" data-end=\"1166\">women actually cycle more than men<\/strong>, defying regional trends.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1194\" data-end=\"1265\">In <strong data-start=\"1197\" data-end=\"1207\">Serbia<\/strong>, bicycles serve as a crucial means of transportation for:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1266\" data-end=\"1519\">\n<li data-start=\"1266\" data-end=\"1308\">\n<p data-start=\"1268\" data-end=\"1308\"><strong data-start=\"1268\" data-end=\"1277\">70.1%<\/strong> of men and <strong data-start=\"1289\" data-end=\"1298\">65.3%<\/strong> of women.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1309\" data-end=\"1401\">\n<p data-start=\"1311\" data-end=\"1401\">Women are more likely to use bikes for <strong data-start=\"1350\" data-end=\"1375\">transporting children<\/strong> (22.5% vs. 15.5% of men).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1402\" data-end=\"1519\">\n<p data-start=\"1404\" data-end=\"1519\">Encouragingly, over <strong data-start=\"1424\" data-end=\"1453\">50% of both women and men<\/strong> see bicycles as an important <strong data-start=\"1483\" data-end=\"1518\">eco-friendly transport solution<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 data-start=\"1526\" data-end=\"1576\"><strong data-start=\"1536\" data-end=\"1576\">Cycling for Health, But Not for Work<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1578\" data-end=\"1803\">In <strong data-start=\"1581\" data-end=\"1595\">Montenegro<\/strong>, women cycle more for <strong data-start=\"1618\" data-end=\"1639\">health and sports<\/strong>, but far fewer use bicycles to get to <strong data-start=\"1678\" data-end=\"1696\">work or school<\/strong> \u2014 with a gender gap of nearly 25%. Only <strong data-start=\"1737\" data-end=\"1755\">49.1% of women<\/strong> report feeling safe using a bike for transport.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1805\" data-end=\"2044\">Electric bicycles (e-bikes) are slowly gaining interest. <strong data-start=\"1862\" data-end=\"1880\">31.4% of women<\/strong> (vs. 28.8% of men) show strong interest in e-bikes, but <strong data-start=\"1937\" data-end=\"1951\">around 30%<\/strong> still don\u2019t know much about them \u2014 showing that awareness campaigns could make a difference.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"1805\" data-end=\"2044\"><strong data-start=\"2060\" data-end=\"2114\">Bosnia and Herzegovina: Walking More, Cycling Less<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2116\" data-end=\"2330\">In BiH, <strong data-start=\"2124\" data-end=\"2133\">41.5%<\/strong> of people own a bicycle. Men are slightly more likely to be owners (44.8%) than women (39.0%). But when it comes to <strong data-start=\"2250\" data-end=\"2267\">daily walking<\/strong>, women lead with <strong data-start=\"2285\" data-end=\"2294\">66.5%<\/strong> walking every day vs. 62.8% of men.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2332\" data-end=\"2449\">However, men are more likely to be <strong data-start=\"2367\" data-end=\"2402\">daily cyclists or skateboarders<\/strong> \u2014 11.2% of men compared to just 6.3% of women.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2451\" data-end=\"2618\">There\u2019s reason for optimism: the <strong data-start=\"2484\" data-end=\"2528\">Ministry of Transport in Sarajevo Canton<\/strong> has allocated funds to improve <strong data-start=\"2560\" data-end=\"2575\">air quality<\/strong> through better <strong data-start=\"2591\" data-end=\"2617\">cycling infrastructure<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"2625\" data-end=\"2677\"><strong data-start=\"2634\" data-end=\"2677\">Moldova: Unsafe Roads, Limited Progress<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2679\" data-end=\"2987\">In <strong data-start=\"2682\" data-end=\"2693\">Moldova<\/strong>, especially in <strong data-start=\"2709\" data-end=\"2724\">rural areas<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"2726\" data-end=\"2744\">19.3% of women<\/strong> report that cycling feels unsafe. Even in urban areas, <strong data-start=\"2800\" data-end=\"2809\">14.3%<\/strong> of women feel the same. That\u2019s a major obstacle \u2014 especially when <strong data-start=\"2876\" data-end=\"2894\">41.7% of women<\/strong> say they simply &#8220;don\u2019t like cycling,&#8221; often due to safety concerns, versus <strong data-start=\"2970\" data-end=\"2986\">28.2% of men<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2989\" data-end=\"3193\">The capital <strong data-start=\"3001\" data-end=\"3013\">Chi\u0219in\u0103u<\/strong> is leading with <strong data-start=\"3030\" data-end=\"3039\">20 km<\/strong> of continuous bike lanes, but other cities like <strong data-start=\"3088\" data-end=\"3097\">B\u0103l\u021bi<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"3099\" data-end=\"3108\">Orhei<\/strong>, and <strong>Laloveni<\/strong> lag behind with limited or poorly implemented bike infrastructure.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"3200\" data-end=\"3263\"><strong data-start=\"3209\" data-end=\"3263\">Prishtina: A City Where Cyclists Still Feel Unsafe<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"3265\" data-end=\"3314\">Cycling in Prishtina \u2013 Still Not Safe Enough. While <strong data-start=\"3322\" data-end=\"3349\">10 km of new bike lanes<\/strong> have been announced, it\u2019s <strong data-start=\"3376\" data-end=\"3399\">nowhere near enough<\/strong>. Roads remain dangerous, lanes unprotected, and safety infrastructure like lights and signage is missing. Especially at night and in high-traffic zones, cyclists remain <strong data-start=\"3569\" data-end=\"3583\">vulnerable<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3586\" data-end=\"3615\"><strong data-start=\"3586\" data-end=\"3615\">What Prishtina Needs Now:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"3616\" data-end=\"3857\">\n<li data-start=\"3616\" data-end=\"3653\">\n<p data-start=\"3618\" data-end=\"3653\">A city-wide <strong data-start=\"3630\" data-end=\"3653\">bike-sharing scheme<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3654\" data-end=\"3704\">\n<p data-start=\"3656\" data-end=\"3704\"><strong data-start=\"3656\" data-end=\"3672\">Safe parking<\/strong> at public buildings and schools<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3705\" data-end=\"3741\">\n<p data-start=\"3707\" data-end=\"3741\"><strong data-start=\"3707\" data-end=\"3741\">Well-lit, connected bike lanes<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3742\" data-end=\"3781\">\n<p data-start=\"3744\" data-end=\"3781\">Clear <strong data-start=\"3750\" data-end=\"3769\">bike route maps<\/strong> and signage<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3782\" data-end=\"3857\">\n<p data-start=\"3784\" data-end=\"3857\">Protected corridors that connect <strong data-start=\"3817\" data-end=\"3857\">neighborhoods, parks, and workplaces<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 data-start=\"3864\" data-end=\"3912\"><strong data-start=\"3873\" data-end=\"3912\">Albania: A Gender Gap on Two Wheels<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"3914\" data-end=\"3968\">Cycling in Albania remains heavily <strong data-start=\"3949\" data-end=\"3967\">male-dominated<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"3969\" data-end=\"4218\">\n<li data-start=\"3969\" data-end=\"4047\">\n<p data-start=\"3971\" data-end=\"4047\">Only <strong data-start=\"3976\" data-end=\"3994\">33.9% of women<\/strong> report using bicycles, compared to <strong data-start=\"4030\" data-end=\"4046\">65.8% of men<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"4048\" data-end=\"4137\">\n<p data-start=\"4050\" data-end=\"4137\">With e-bikes, the gap widens: <strong data-start=\"4080\" data-end=\"4106\">69.3% of users are men<\/strong>, and just <strong data-start=\"4117\" data-end=\"4136\">30.7% are women<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"4138\" data-end=\"4218\">\n<p data-start=\"4140\" data-end=\"4218\">Over <strong data-start=\"4145\" data-end=\"4161\">50% of women<\/strong> cite <strong data-start=\"4167\" data-end=\"4186\">safety concerns<\/strong> as the reason they don\u2019t cycle.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"4220\" data-end=\"4388\">But there is hope. In <strong data-start=\"4242\" data-end=\"4252\">Tirana<\/strong>, just <strong data-start=\"4259\" data-end=\"4288\">20% of cyclists are women<\/strong> \u2014 but with safer lanes, visible role models, and awareness efforts, that number could rise quickly.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"4395\" data-end=\"4423\"><strong data-start=\"4402\" data-end=\"4423\">What Can Be Done?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"4425\" data-end=\"4515\">To truly celebrate World Bicycle Day, governments and cities must move beyond slogans and:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"4516\" data-end=\"4943\">\n<li data-start=\"4516\" data-end=\"4568\">\n<p data-start=\"4518\" data-end=\"4568\">Build and maintain <strong data-start=\"4537\" data-end=\"4568\">safe, continuous bike lanes<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"4569\" data-end=\"4671\">\n<p data-start=\"4571\" data-end=\"4671\">Ensure <strong data-start=\"4578\" data-end=\"4607\">gender-sensitive planning<\/strong>, including lighting, safety, and child transport considerations<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"4672\" data-end=\"4774\">\n<p data-start=\"4674\" data-end=\"4774\">Launch <strong data-start=\"4681\" data-end=\"4717\">awareness and training campaigns<\/strong> especially aimed at encouraging women and girls to cycle<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"4775\" data-end=\"4863\">\n<p data-start=\"4777\" data-end=\"4863\">Create <strong data-start=\"4784\" data-end=\"4809\">bike-sharing programs<\/strong>, especially in underserved and low-income communities<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"4864\" data-end=\"4943\">\n<p data-start=\"4866\" data-end=\"4943\">Involve <strong data-start=\"4874\" data-end=\"4907\">local CSOs and women\u2019s groups<\/strong> in planning urban mobility policies<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The data are part of the <span data-teams=\"true\">GBWN Transport Research from Gender and Climate change perspective done in all 7 countries and full reports will be available soon!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-17278 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/gbwn.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/GBWN-Bicycle-day-Research-Infographic.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1414\" height=\"2000\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gbwn.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/GBWN-Bicycle-day-Research-Infographic.jpg 1414w, https:\/\/gbwn.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/GBWN-Bicycle-day-Research-Infographic-212x300.jpg 212w, https:\/\/gbwn.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/GBWN-Bicycle-day-Research-Infographic-724x1024.jpg 724w, https:\/\/gbwn.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/GBWN-Bicycle-day-Research-Infographic-768x1086.jpg 768w, https:\/\/gbwn.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/GBWN-Bicycle-day-Research-Infographic-1086x1536.jpg 1086w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1414px) 100vw, 1414px\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today, the 3rd of June, on World Bicycle Day, we celebrate the humble bicycle \u2014 a tool for clean transport, better health, and gender-inclusive mobility.
